Investigating the Therapeutic Potential of Extracellular Vesicles Derived From Gestational Cells For Perinatal Cerebral and Pulmonary Injury

Premature birth poses significant health risks for newborns, frequently leading to lung injury and brain damage. These complications increase the risk of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung disease, and cerebral palsy, a condition affecting movement and coordination. Despite medical advancements, the incidence of these conditions remains a persistent issue. My PhD research explored extracellular vesicles—small particles naturally released by cells from the amnion and umbilical cord—as a treatment to protect and heal the lungs and brain of preterm babies. In my research, we achieved encouraging outcomes in animal studies that establish a foundation for potential clinical investigation.
