Bedford New species of goanna lizard allied with Varanus glauerti_Supplementary_Table_S1

Taxonomic work in the past three decades on the goanna lizards (Varanidae) from the Australo-Papuan region has led to the description of 33 species. The discovery of many of these taxa resulted from an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphological and molecular datasets. Some of the new taxa were found in the sub-genus Odatria from Australia. Here we describe another species from the sub-genus Odatria that is allied with the Kimberley Rock Goanna, Varanus glauerti. The new species is highly distinct from V. glauerti in nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenetic analyses and can be morphologically diagnosed on dorsal and tail colour patterns. The new species appears to be a short-range endemic restricted primarily to the sandstone Pinkerton Ranges of the north-western Northern Territory. We also describe two sub-species from V. glauerti, with the nominal sub-species from the west Kimberley and the new sub-species from the east Kimberley. The two sub-species can be distinguished in nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenetic analyses and can be morphologically diagnosed on dorsal and tail colour patterns and body size. One of our west Kimberley samples is a hybrid, but the ranges of both sub-species in the central Kimberley need further definition to better understand the degree of gene flow between the two.
