Morphological disparity analyses of modern and Cretaceous octobrachian jaws

This file set includes the character matrices, R codes, and result tables used for morphological disparity analyses of modern and Cretaceous octobrachian jaws in the publication “Earliest octopuses were giant top predators in Cretaceous oceans”. The principal coordinates analysis plot of the analyses is shown in fig. S5 of the publication. The details of each file are described below.
character_matrix_octobrachia_raw.xlsx: A character matrix of modern and Cretaceous octobrachian jaws based on 19 characters used in taxonomy. The data were taken from 19 extant species, covering all extant octobrachian families, and two fossil species (Nanaimoteuthis jeletzkyi and N. haggarti).
character_matrix_octobrachia_for_analyses.csv: A characters matrix transformed into a suitable style for reading in R 4.4.2 (The R Foundation).
Gower_distance_calculation.r: A R code for calculating Gower's similarity coefficient from the matrix "character_matrix_octobrachia_for_analyses.csv".
Gower_distance_matrix.csv: A distance matrix showing the result of the calculation of Gower's similarity coefficient.
PCoA_calculation.r: A R code for conducting principal coordinates analysis of the matrix "Gower_distance_matrix.csv".
PCoA_results.csv: A table showing principal coordinates for modern and Cretaceous octobrachian jaws obtained by the above analysis.
