The beginnings of the Chinese mission of Sabatino de Ursis are narrated in a series of letters written between 1605 and 1610 and describe all the missionary dynamism of a new world to be known, lived and embodied, in order to convey the Christian message. In the letters (6 in total), kept in the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu, the image of the Jesuit missionary in formation in the important college of Macao and collaborator of Father Matteo Ricci, of whom he will take the place in Beijing, is captured. Particularly rich in valuable information are the epistles addressed to Bernardino Realino, Claudio Acquaviva, António Mascarenhas and João Álvares. The essay suggests an approach to the sources in view of a more in - depth investigation on the basis of field studies and in the light of the other writings already published by de Ursis.
