The study aims to estimate the prevalence and variables associated with asymptomatic carriage of Neisseria meningitidis among students from Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. This cross-sectional study includes students 18-35 years old from cities in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. The isolates will be characterized by serogroup, MLST, vaccine antigens, antimicrobial susceptibility, and whole genome sequencing. Demographic data and other variables will be determined as age, sex, geographic location, educational level, number of household members, previous use of meningococcal vaccine and antimicrobial agents, active or passive smoking, frequency of attendance to bars, clubs or “funk parties”, contact with patients diagnosed with meningococcal disease, travel abroad, respiratory tract infection, alcohol consumption, and prevalence of N. meningitidis colonization.
