No small wonder

This work is an extension of Weaver's large format room immersive environments. It employs vast scale, sound, found and fabricated sculptural elements and saturated colour, incorporated disparate sculptural objects into cohesive environments that evoke her abiding interests in art history, science and haute-couture and the traditions and aesthetics of other cultures. A reference point for this work was 18th century Japanese artist Ito Jakuchu. His Colourful Realm of Living Beings, 1757-70, depicts various birds, flowers, insects, fishes and other sea creatures with extraordinary realism and compassion that he hoped would be a touchstone for the inviolable relationship between human beings and the organic universe. Weaver's vast sand coloured carpet dotted with objects, shells, starfish, rocks seaweed, a bright yellow beaver and tree branch hints at deluge and transformation caused by nature and/or human intervention. Her research investigates the way natural and manmade objects are all reduced to the same created form. She extends the boundaries of what is possible in the transformations of nature and culture through research into the effective language of materials, bringing crafted elements into alignment with other expressive forms. She employs camouflage, "a physical and psychological state, a way of transforming meaning as well as the outward appearance, through mimicry or taking on other aspects of the environment around us. This allows for a sense of reinvention, which can be liberating. She also researches whether by the use altering and combining disparate forms allows the inherent qualities of the objects to exist simultaneously with the new configuration or whether they may be eradicated" = interview with Rachel Kent, Snr.
