A diversified and stable community structure might be a result of this adaptation to long-term petroleum hydrocarbon exposure and might be associated with eventual utilization of the prevalent hydrocarbons. In this study, the prokaryotic (mainly bacterial) and eukaryotic (mainly fungal and protozoan) communities associated with environmentally diversified surficial petroleum natural seeps were evaluated.
