This study examined the influence of the concentration and form of organic carbon on microbial communities in building level premise plumbing. Biologically active carbon filtration, membrane filtration, and pasteurization were used to manipulate the dissolved organic carbon and cell levels within municipal tap water. These waters were fed for eight months into convectively-mixed pipe reactors which simulate distal portions of hot water recicrulating plumbing. Samples were collected over eight months from the influent waters, biofilms within the reactors, and reactor effluent bulk water. Each sample underwent DNA extraction, PCR amplification of the V4-V5 region, and sequenced using paired-end Illumina sequencing.
