European wall lizards are broadly distributed throughout the Mediterranean and are famous amongst evolutionary biologists for their spectacular color variations. The species Podarcis muralis has prominently featured in evolutionary genetics (e.g., Andrade et al., 2019, PNAS), sexual selection research (e.g. I de Lanuza et al., 2017, Evolution) and phylogeography (While et al., 2015, Ecol Lett). An extensive research focus lies on the origin and introgressive spread of a novel color variant that is currently spreading along the Italian coast (e.g., While et al., 2015, Ecol Lett, Yang et al, 2018, Ecol Evol; Yang et al., 2020, Evolution; Feiner et al., in prep). We there constructed a reference genome for the Italian subspecies (lineage) Podarcis muralis nigriventris.
