The aim of this study is to better understand how bacteria utilise acetaldehyde as a carbon source. By sequencing the genome of bacteria such as Rhodococcus sp. A14 we can identify the tools (or genes) these organisms possess in order to use acetaldehyde as a carbon and/or energy source. This will enable the metabolic pathway(s) of bacterial acetaldehyde degradation to be determined in the future.
