资源简介:

This paper examines how the Glazer family’s 2005 leveraged buyout of Manchester United, and the financial architecture it imposed, undermined both the club’s sporting competitiveness and its institutional capacity. In the 2026 financial year the club reported record revenue of £677.6 million alongside its seventh consecutive annual net loss, total debt of roughly £1.15 billion and an estimated £852 million in cumulative interest paid since 2005. Over the same period it fell from first to eighth in the Deloitte Football Money League. Drawing on SEC filings, audited accounts, the Deloitte Football Money League, Transfermarkt data and comparisons with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City, the paper applies five frameworks: leveraged buyout mechanics, agency theory, the principal-agent problem, capital misallocation and organisational succession theory. It argues that revenue growth without institutional investment is value extraction rather than value creation, and that a dual-class share structure removes the governance mechanisms that would normally correct this. It also assesses the 2024 INEOS partial acquisition and the implications for football governance regulation, including the Football Governance Act 2025. This is an independent research paper and has not been peer reviewed.
