The NC983 isolate is a construct of ATCC 14028s, where the Fumarate Nitrate Reductase gene (fnr) has been inactivated by the insertion of transposon Tn10. The Fnr mutant was then treated with fusaric acid to eliminate the transposon. Thus, the NC983 isolate is tetracycline sensitive and FNR negative.
