Differential Expression Profiling of Salivary MicroRNA for Gingivitis and Periodontitis Patients. Homo sapiens

The purpose of the study was to investigate the differential expression profiles of miRNAs in gingivitis and periodontitis compared to healthy subjects. For this, we extracted the total RNA from the salivary fluids of the subjects of this study then, we purified the small RNA which was labeled and used for microarray analysis with the Affymetrix GeneChip miRNA 4.0 platform. We found that there are a considerable number of dysregulated miRNAs in gingivitis and periodontitis compared to healthy people and we found evidence for an overall altered miRNA expression pattern between these types of periodontal diseases. These data could shed light on miRNA-associated molecular mechanisms, candidate biomarkers, and therapeutic targets for such diseases.
