Supragingival and subgingival calculus were collected and combined from the teeth of 12 adult human skeletons at the University Museum, University of Tokyo. For comparison, the genomic DNA samples of soil near the mandibular foramen of the skeletons and sterilized water, as controls, were subjected to the same analysis as the calculus. Masks, nitrile gloves, hairnets, and laboratory coats were worn throughout the process.
