Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) concentrations from CTD Niskin bottle samples collected at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain - Sustained Observatory (PAP-SO) site during RRS James Cook cruise JC247 in May 2023

This dataset comprises Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) samples from CTD Niskin bottles collected in May 2023 during RRS James Cook cruise JC247 at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain - Sustained Observatory (PAP-SO) site (49N 16W) in the North East Atlantic and were analysed at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton. Values for Nitrogen and Carbon 13 are also available but are not verified. 1000 ml samples were filtered through pre-combusted (24 h at 450°C), pre-weighed GFF filters (nominal pore-size 0.7 µm, 25 mm diameter, Whatman), briefly rinsed with filtered sea water, dried at 50°C for 24 hours plus, measured by Elemental Analyser. Samples were acidified by fuming with 35% hydrochloric acid for 24 h to remove any inorganic carbon, dried (50°C, >24 h), pelleted in tin disks (Elemental microanalysis). The samples were analysed using a Thermo Fisher Scientific FLASH 2000 Organic Elemental Analyser (s/n Flash EA - 2014.F0080) and Delta V IRMS(s/n - 08511D-1). Carbon and Nitrogen calibrations were performed using a series of standards of varying weights (1 - 5 mg) with known percentage content of carbon and nitrogen at the beginning of each batch. All samples were blank corrected. This dataset was collected under the NERC funded CLASS programme by scientists at the National Oceanography Centre.
