Photographic Documentation of Vegetation Change in South Africa: A 60-Year Comparison Across Four Biomes between Bloemfontein and Stellenbosch

This project started with this trip. ROADSIDE OBSERVATIONS ON THE VEGETATION BETWEEN BLOEMFONTEIN AND STELLENBOSCH VIA THE KARROO AND THE HEX RIVER PASS, AND VIA THE GARDEN ROUTE AND THE SUURBERG PASS. J.W. Morris These photos were taken on a trip undertaken by Mr B.J. Huntley and the author during July, 1966. The outward trip from Bloemfontein to Stellenbosch was via the Karroo and Hex River Pass. The return trip was via the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth and Suurberg Pass. Short notes were made on each Veld Type as delineated by Acocks in his Memoir (1953) and where possible, at least one photo of each type was taken. Numbers next to photos refer to negatives. As well as the date and locality of each photo, the Veld Type is given. Four rolls of '120' film were exposed. The trip will be repeated during 2026, 60 years later. New images will be added here.
