Leveraging the differences in thermodynamic phases of cloud-top particles, a thresholding method is adopted to identify cloud phases for cloud-contained pixels, resulting in cloud phase products. Using cloud-top temperature/altitude, cloud optical thickness, cloud phase and other cloud microphysical properties, another thresholding method is applied to classify cloud-contained pixels into high-, middle-, and low-level clouds, yielding cloud classification products. The cloud type and phase algorithms primarily generate thermodynamic type and phase products of cloud tops, with 6 and 4 categories of output products respectively. The cloud type products include: warm (liquid) water clouds, supercooled water clouds, mixed-phase clouds, opaque ice clouds, cirrus clouds (i.e., semi-transparent ice clouds), and multi-layer clouds (with the upper layer being semi-transparent)
