Microaggressions Results

151 credentialed mental health professionals observed a vignette of a White counselor with a Black Client. In the Microaggression condition (MO), the counselor committed microaggressions in Parts 1 and 2 of the vignette. In the Microaggression + Repair condition (MR), Part 1 was the same as in the MO condition, but in Part 2, the counselor attempted repair the relationship. We found that participants who were less able to recognize microaggressions could perceive the counselor's and the client's discomfort, but did not perceive the counselor as lacking cultural humility or missing cultural opportunities, but the participants who were more capable of recognizing microaggressions also perceived the cultural limitations of the counselor.
