Jack Edman was Lederberg's closest friend and one of several classmates of his from Stuyvesant High School who later served in World War 2 in the Signal Corps. The format is that of a "V-gram", a cannonical mode of letter-writing during the war. For security and to save shipping weight, they were often microfilmed.
