More and more people are unable to tolerate wheat. The reasons for this can be a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance (celiac disease), both clearly defined diseases. However, intolerance to wheat often has other causes, the diagnosis of which is still very complex. The symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract are sometimes misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leading to suboptimal therapy.The main goal of "INDICATE-FH" is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of wheat-dependent food intolerances. To this end, the interdisciplinary project team will develop diagnostic procedures that can distinguish between the various causes of wheat intolerance and differentiate them from irritable bowel syndrome.As part of this project, the gut microbiome is to be investigated in the hope to gain valuable insights into factors contributing to wheat intolerances.Based on the insights gained into the diagnosis of wheat intolerance, patients can be offered a more specific and less burdensome dietary therapy in the future.
