Multiplane microscopic atlas of rat brain zincergic terminal fields and metal-containing glia stained with Timm’s sulphide silver method (v1)

The dataset comprises high-resolution bright-field microscopy images of coronal, horizontal and sagittal serial rat brain sections in which zincergic terminal fields and metal-containing glia are visualised. The historical histological material was originally prepared to map the presence of zinc and heavy metals in the adult Wistar rat brain, and especially in the hippocampal formation. Alternating sections were stained with the Timm-Haug73 modification of the Timm’s sulphide silver method or Nissl staining for cytoarchitecture. The images are suitable as a microscopic reference resource for studies of terminal fields of zincergic fibre systems, and sulphide silver stained neuronal perikarya and glial cells, and as a general histological reference for researchers interested in normal rat brain architecture.
