Dual Enrollment, Institutional Characteristics, and the 2025 Carnegie Classifications for U.S. Higher Education Institutions (2023-2024)

This dataset provides an institutional-level analysis of dual enrollment programs at 2,118 Title IV-eligible colleges and universities across the United States. It was compiled to support policy research on the landscape of early college credit opportunities and their relationship with institutional mission, structure, and student outcome profiles. A key feature of this dataset is the integration of dual enrollment activity with the newly released 2025 Carnegie Classifications, including the Basic, Social and Economic Mobility, and Research classifications. The dataset contains detailed dual enrollment counts by race, ethnicity, and gender, along with numerous institutional characteristics such as sector, urbanicity, and HBCU status. It also includes several key derived variables created for analysis, most notably "Dual Enrollment Intensity," which measures the size of an institution's dual enrollment program relative to its full-time equivalent undergraduate population. This curated dataset is designed to facilitate research on which types of institutions are the primary providers of dual enrollment and how this form of engagement aligns with their broader mission and performance on access and earnings metrics. The dataset was constructed on September 29, 2025, by merging data from three primary sources using the unique institutional identifier (UnitID): Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) 2024-2025 Collection Year: Dual enrollment counts are from the 12-Month Enrollment (EFFY) survey component, reflecting the 2023-2024 academic year. The denominator for the intensity metric (FTEUndergraduate24) is the 12-month full-time equivalent (FTE) unduplicated undergraduate count from the 12-Month Enrollment (E12) survey component. Other institutional characteristics are also sourced from various IPEDS survey components. 2025 Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education: Sourced from the public data files provided by the American Council on Education (ACE). This includes the basicclass24, succaccessclass24, and researchclass24 variables. The primary derived metric, dualenrollintensity, was calculated as: (Total Dual Enrollment Students / 12-Month Unduplicated FTE Undergraduate Enrollment) Dichotomous variables for institutional control, level, urbanicity, and research activity were generated for regression analysis.
