The design is a vertical number line that moves up and down with the rotation of a gear. This was designed because a number line that goes up and down more accurately represents the concept of addition and subtraction, therefore making it easier for users to make sense of the concept. As numbers get higher the number line gets higher, as numbers get lower the number line gets lower.
