Kenya (2011): EVALUATION OF THE "SIRI" EDUTAINMENT TELEVISION SERIES ON PROMOTING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE AMONG MEN AND WOMEN IN KENYA.

ABOUT SIRI EDUTAINMENT SERIES PSI Kenya in collaboration with stakeholders developed a series of interactive, innovative and educational multi-media materials that consisted of a TV drama series, photo novella, community discussion guide, short DVD facilitation guide, quick reference guide, and community theatre skits. The multi-media materials were hinged on the TV edutainment drama series that consisted of a series of stories and characters that addressed essential messages about key HIV & reproductive health issues that the Ministry of Health had identified as essential to address in its communication strategy. These messages included promotion of HIV Counseling and Testing, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, Sexual Gender Based Violence services and promotion of Family Planning. The communication targeted men and women of reproductive age in urban and rural areas.The multi-media communication aptly named SIRI was informed by the need to create an entertaining but ed ucative communication campaign that focuses on the universe of women engaging and sharing their secrets and getting enlightened so that they can make informed choices regarding reproductive health with the support from their male partners. The campaign sought to address societal and individual challenges like stigma around HTC, PMTCT and family planning by empowering women to make informed decisions. ABOUT THE EVALUATION The purpose of this evaluation is to assess the relationship between exposure to the SIRI edutainment program and uptake or behavioral determinants of HIV testing and counseling services. The study objectives were; Behavior relative to exposure to SIRI To assess relationship/imp act of exposure to SIRI on uptake -of HTC by men and women of reproductive age; to assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on disclosure HIV status by men and women of reproductive age to their partners; Determinants of behavior relative to exposure to SIRI Opportunity: To assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on social norms that are supportive of men who go for HTC with their partners Ability: To assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on knowledge about the importance of PMTCT services ; to assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on male support to female partners in attending PMTCT services; to assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on ability of women to persuade their partners to go for HTC with them; to assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on ability of men and women to disclose HIV status to their partner(s) Motivation: To assess relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on outcome expectation that going for HTC can help one plan for their future; to asses relationship/impact of exposure to SIRI on intention to uptake HTC and to disclose HIV status to one's partner among those who have never been tested
