• Premise of the study: Microsatellite primers were developed in Torreya yunnanensis , to investigate the genetic diversity, phylogeography and population structure of T. yunnanensis.• Methods and Results: Sixteen primer sets were identified using next generation sequencing and bioinformatic screening. Most primers also amplified in T. fargesii, T. grandis, T. nucifera and T. jackii.• Conclusions: These results indicate the utility of primers in T. yunnanensis for future studies of molecular ecology as well as their applicability across the genus.
