Clostridium butyricum CWBI1009, a strain recently isolated from an anaerobic sludge, was previously shown to ferment different carbon sources at acidic pH, to H2 and CO2 with formate, butyrate and acetate as the main fermentation end-products. Despite the fact that this bacterium has its growth optimum at pH 7.3, it only starts to produce H2 when the pH drops down, due to the natural acidification of the medium that is a consequence of its fermentative activity. Although, many studies have described the fermentative activity of C. butyricum in relation to H2 production, a comprehensive analysis of the fermentative pathways at the genome and protein levels has not yet been reported.
