African American Newspapers in Rowell's and Ayer's Press Directories, 1869-1925 This dataset contains African American newspaper titles extracted from two major American press directories: George P. Rowell & Co.'s American Newspaper Directory (1869-1909) and N.W. Ayer & Son's American Newspaper Annual and Directory (1880-1925). The data was derived from OCR-processed digitized copies of these directories. Files This dataset contains two CSV files: african_american_press_listings_unique_titles.csv (2,822 titles) -- Deduplicated by paper_id (a composite key of title, city, and state), so each newspaper appears only once. Useful for counting distinct publications. african_american_press_listings_total_titles.csv (9,672 listings) -- Contains every directory listing across all years and both directories. The same newspaper may appear multiple times, once for each year and directory in which it was listed. Useful for tracking when papers were active, how circulation changed over time, or comparing coverage between directories. Additional titles were identified from keywords in the genre_or_type field (e.g., "African Methodist Episcopal"), the notes field, and the title field (e.g., titles containing "Colored," "Negro," "African," or "Freedmen"). Coverage and limitations The data spans 48 states and territories, with the highest concentrations in Mississippi (814 listings), Georgia (806), Alabama (689), Texas (548), and Tennessee (493). Ayer contributes the majority of listings (7,488 of 9,672), consistent with Ayer's more systematic coverage of the African American press. Rowell contributes 2,183 listings. Not all African American newspapers were explicitly labeled as such in the directories. This dataset captures only those with identifiable racial or ethnic markers and likely undercounts the true number of African American newspapers in this period. Both directories have gaps in year coverage. Rowell is missing volumes for 1870, 1886, 1892, 1904, and 1908. Ayer is missing 1887, 1891, 1894, 1896, 1920, and 1924. The data was extracted via OCR and may contain residual errors in titles, locations, and other fields despite extensive cleaning. Circulation figures were self-reported by publishers to the directory compilers and should be treated with caution. The directories themselves sometimes flagged unreliable figures. The date_established field reflects what was reported in each directory edition, and reported founding dates sometimes vary across editions for the same paper. Context Armistead Scott Pride, in compiling A Register and History of Negro Newspapers in the United States: 1827-1950 (1950), identified approximately 2,700 African American newspaper titles, noting that "no single source has been more rich in providing titles" than the Ayer annuals. This dataset, derived computationally from the digitized directories, yields a comparable count of 2,822 unique titles for the period 1869-1925.
