On behalf of the Clean Air Platform (Expert Forum of the Federal States, the BMNT and the Federal Environment Agency), the Federal Environment Agency investigated how fine dust pollution has developed in Austria and which factors were decisive for this. In general, fine particulate matter pollution in Austria has decreased significantly since 2011, but at the beginning of 2017 comparatively high levels of pollution occurred in some regions. The reason for this was the low temperatures and weather conditions with regional pollutant accumulation and long-distance transport from Eastern Europe. The general decreasing trend is determined by the reduction of particulate matter emissions in Austria and neighbouring countries, but also by weather conditions that have a positive effect. Emissions are expected to continue to decline in the future.
