Large-scale energy storage options are limited and hamper the global, energy revolution.Subsurface gas reservoirs (GS) constitute safe, natural, and ubiquitous capacities for hydrogen (H2) storage. However, due to its explosive nature H2 is not an ideal storage compound, as opposed to the readily utilized gas methane (CH4). This study aimed to determine the storability of H2 in biogenic GS as well as the potential of biological, underground conversion of said H2 to methane in-situ, utilizing methanogenic archaea.
