In the last 7 years 1ES 1927+654/ASASSN-18el has defied what we thoughtpossible for an AGN. Prior to 2018 this bare Seyfert 2 lacked significantobscuration in the X-ray yet had no broad optical emission lines. In anoutburst beginning in 2018 this source became the first AGN to show theappearance of broad optical emission lines in real time. A rapid drop in theX-ray flux by 4 orders of magnitude followed along with an extreme softening toa nearly thermal X-ray spectrum. This implied that the canonical X-ray coronahad been destroyed possibly due to a tidal disruption event occurring in anexisting AGN. The X-ray corona rebuilt over 4 years as the X-ray luminositypeaked near the Eddington limit (1e6 Msun) before coming back down to its pre-outburst state. [truncated!
