Aspergillus niger is the best-known pathogen causing black mold in onionaround the world. However, recently A. welwitschiae has been found inassociation with onion black mold. Almost all the surveyed onionvendors complained about the presence of onion black mold and thedisease incidence ranged from 90-100%. Pathogen was isolated into pureculture and Calmodulin gene sequence of a selected isolate wascompared to the NCBI data base confirming that the species wasA.welwitschiae. This is the first report of A. welwitschiae causing blackmold of onions.
