Leaving My Fingerprint: Motivations and Challenges of Contributing to OSS for Social Good

Abstract
When incentivizing software developers to contribute to open source software (OSS), such incentive practices are often framed as supporting developer communities through tool-building opportunities. However, this is not the sole driver of contributions; the growing interest in OSS can also be attributed to software developers choosing to leverage their technical skills to advance collective social good. To understand how developers identify such projects, their motivations for contributing, and the challenges they face, we conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with OSS for Social Good (OSS4SG) contributors. From our interview analysis, we identified thematic contribution styles that we aim to understand at scale via a survey of over 5,765 OSS and Open projects.
