The deposit comprises six files in three paired sets (data file + README):

Set 01 — HRG unit cost extract: Activity, unit cost, and total cost by HRG subcategory for maternity delivery episodes in England 2024/25, extracted from the NHS England National Schedule of NHS Costs 2024/25. Used to derive the activity-weighted pathway costs in Table 1 of the paper.

Set 02 — NHS Resolution FOI response FOI_7787: The complete response to a Freedom of Information request submitted under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, providing obstetric claims data broken down by primary cause, primary injury, and year of closure for 2015/16–2024/25. This is the primary data source for the cause-code analysis in Table 2 and the annual litigation summary in Table 3.

Set 03 — Calculation workbook: A fully formula-driven Excel workbook reproducing Table 4 of the paper (indemnity cost attribution and total system cost excess of planned vaginal birth over planned caesarean section on cash and actuarial bases) and verifying the HRG pathway unit cost calculations in Table 1. All inputs are sourced and annotated; calculated values are formula-driven and include automatic sense-checks against the figures stated in the paper.
