Magnetic structure analysis of ilmenite-type high-entropy oxide

We propose to perform neutron diffraction experiment on the ilmenite-type high-entropy oxide (Mg_0.2Mn_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2Zn_0.2)TiO_3 to reveal its magnetic structure. High-entropy oxides containing more than 5 different cations recently attract attention as a novel platform of multifunctional properties. Despite strong cation disorder, some high-entropy oxides have been shown to undergo long-range magnetic ordering. High-entropy oxides have several magnetic cations with different electronic configurations, which may result in bond-disorder in magnetic interactions. Such bond disorder induces frustration, and an appearance of unconventional magnetic properties can be expected. The high-entropy ilmenite (Mg_0.2Mn_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2Zn_0.2)TiO_3 displays antiferromagnetic order at 9 K, and frustrated behavior has been discerned in the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, suggesting the effect of bond-disorder. Therefore, its magnetic structure is of particular interest. We therefore aim to solve the magnetic structure by powder neutron diffraction measurement on high-flux and high-resolution instrument GEM.
