Realistic internal wave field was numerically reproduced in the SCS with both wind and tide forcing. The simulation period is from October 9 to November 12, 2012, a total of 35 days, during which typhoon Son-tinh passed through the SCS. The model domain is 105~124°E, 12~23°N. Uniform grids are used in horizontal with a resolution of 2km × 2km, while non-uniform grids are used in vertical ranging from 5 m near the sea surface to 125 m near the sea bed, i.e., 15 layers above 120 meters, 17 layers between 120 and 500 meters, and 58 layers between 500 and 6000 meters. The nonlocal K-profile parameterization is used to parameterize vertical mixing. Initial tide and wind forcing are derived from the TPXO8 tide model and NCEP CFSv2 (https://www.hycom.org/dataserver/ncep-cfsv2), respectively. Besides, initial temperature, salinity, and density fields were horizontally homogenous, using monthly averaged data from WOA climate state in October.
