First tagged release of the aggregate tables computed from the complete public record of US Small Business Administration 7(a) lending, fiscal years 1992 to 2026. What is in this release chargeoff_by_state.csv - charge-off rates for all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico chargeoff_by_industry.csv - charge-off rates by NAICS industry chargeoff_by_franchise.csv - charge-off rates by franchise brand, minimum 400 resolved loans Method Charge-off rate is charged-off loans as a share of resolved loans, where resolved means the loan was either paid in full or charged off. Loans still outstanding are excluded because their outcome is unknown. The source file covers 1,912,539 loans, of which 1,363,711 have reached a conclusion. A note on franchise names Franchise brand names in the SBA source file are not consistently formatted, so the same brand appears under several spellings. Names are normalised to uppercase with non-alphanumeric characters stripped before aggregation. Aggregating on the raw field splits brands and produces incorrect figures. Headline findings Franchise loans charged off at 16.0% of resolved loans against 15.8% for independents, effectively identical Among brands with at least 400 resolved loans, rates range from 4.5% to 34.8% State rates range from 7.7% in Montana to 23.9% in Florida Licence CC BY 4.0.
