Thisreportprovidesanoverviewofthecurrentstateofquantumtechnologyanditspotentialcommercialandmilitaryapplications.Theauthordiscusseseachofthethreemajorcategoriesofquantumtechnology:quantumsensing,quantumcommunication,andquantumcomputing.Healsoconsidersthelikelycommercialoutlookoverthenextfewyears,themajorinternationalplayers,andthepotentialnationalsecurityimplicationsoftheseemergingtechnologies.Thisreportisbasedonasurveyoftheavailableacademicliterature,newsreporting,andgovernment-issuedpositionpapers.Mostofthesetechnologiesarestillinthelaboratory.Applicationsofquantumsensingcouldbecomecommerciallyormilitarilyreadywithinthenextfewyears.Althoughlimitedcommercialdeploymentofquantumcommunicationtechnologyalreadyexists,themost-usefulmilitaryapplicationsstillliemanyyearsaway.Similarly,theremaybenicheapplicationsofquantumcomputersinthefuture,butallknownapplicationsarelikelyatleasttenyearsaway.Chinacurrentlyleadstheworldinthedevelopmentofquantumcommunication,whiletheUnitedStatesleadsinthedevelopmentofquantumcomputing.
