Model data from the numerical setup of the tidal Elbe presented in Reese et al. (2026): "The role of the shoal - salt mixing mechanisms in a partially mixed tidal estuary with channel-shoal geometry" [1], used to create the figures shown in Burchard et al. (2026): "Estuarine Mixing" [2] Each file contains data for a sequence of ten days, with the starting day given through the file naming convention: YYYYMMDD_description.nc4 The numerical model uses adaptive vertical coordinates, with the number of each vertical grid layer given in the output coordinate "level". level=1 corresponds to the bottommost layer, level=40 is the surface layer. Certain variables are given in salinity class bins of dimension salt_s instead of vertical coordinates as listed below. Explanation of each data set: 202404*_Mean_review__allvars.nc4: Variables in Euclidean space (time, z,y,x) salt_mean: salinity s(x,y,z,t) (g/kg) velocities in global x- and y-directions, , velx3d_mean, vely3d_mean, respectively (m/s) grid metrics as given in the respective netcdf header description Each file contains data for a sequence of ten days, with the starting day given through the file naming convention: YYYYMMDD_description.nc4 Total data coverage: 1 month (April 2024) Temporal resolution: 12h 25min (~M2 tidal period); averaged over each period Fig. 8, C1 202404*_DiaMixing_Mean_review__allvars.nc4: Variables in salinity (S-)space (time, S,y,x) salt_s: salinity class S (g/kg), local physical (hpmS_s_mean) and numerical (hnmS_s_mean) mixing per salinity class salt_s Further transports (volume, salt, salinity squared) and grid metrics as given in the respective netcdf header description Each file contains data for a sequence of ten days, with the starting day given through the file naming convention: YYYYMMDD_description.nc4 Total data coverage: 1 month (April 2024) Temporal resolution: 12h 25min (~M2 tidal period); averaged over each period Fig. 2, 4, 8 20240416_Neap__reduced_cutout.nc4: High-resolution output at peak neap tide in Euclidean space (time, z,y,x) for a select section of the inner estuary Estuarine parameters (horizontal velocities, salinity, diffusivity, local mixing) and grid metrics as given in the netcdf header description Local bathymetry, where values <0 correspond to elevations above mean sea level, and values =-10m correspond to unfloodable land Contains data for a sequence of selected tidal cycles around peak neap tide Total data coverage: 2 days (2024/04/17 00:00:00 to 2024/04/19 00:00:00) Temporal resolution: 10min snapshots Fig. 12 Further documentation, including all provided variables, their respective meaning and physical dimensions, can be found in the header of each netcdf file.
