Cyanobacteria species having environmental biotechnology implications

Coal mining and smelting has been an important aspect of livelihood in Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India. The region is also enriched with vital mineral resources which are exploited by the cement companies with less environmental concerns. In context to this microbial diversity has been widely depleted due to coal smelting operations. Since this culture has been isolated from a coal mining area, it can probably be used for developing strategies for bio-remediation of metal contamination in those smelting operated areas.
