Dataset from: Environmental impact of peat alternatives in growing media for European mushroom production

Mushrooms are traditionally produced using peat as casing material. This dataset belongs to Environmental impact of peat alternatives in growing media for European mushroom production, a paper assessing the potential impact of four potential alternative casing materials: sphagnum moss, grass fibers, spent casing and bark. This publication uses a cradle-to-(farm)gate LCA with two functional units: the kg and € of harvested mushrooms. The publication i) compared the environmental impacts of mushroom produced with different growing media across Europe; ii)identified environmental hotspots across the value chains of mushroom growing media; and iii) provide insights on the sustainability of mushroom growing media production.
