Snowflake Cost Optimization App

Snowflake costs are usually incurred from Compute Resources, Storage Resources, and Data Transfers. Having a good understanding of the incurred cost is very important before taking steps to manage the cost.

KPI’s cost optimizer gives Snowflake users visibility on Compute credits, Storage Bytes, and Data Transfers bytes. User can enter their contracted rates for each of these services from the reporting front end and get an estimated cost for each of these categories.

DASHBOARD DETAILS
The app has the following dashboard pages:

Overall Compute Credits: This page gives a summarized view of credits consumed by various services and components of Snowflake.
Warehouse Credits: This page gives detailed info about the credits consumed by the different warehouses.
Warehouse Performance: This page gives info on the query load on the warehouse.
Query Performance: This page gives info about several queries by hour, query queuing time, and execution time.
Storage Usage: This page gives info about the storage data that is billable.
Data Transfer Bytes: This page gives info on the billable data transfer.
Data Retention: This page shows info about the retention period of the tables.
Configuration Recommendation: This page gives recommendations for resource monitoring and auto-suspend time for warehouses.
Budget Vs Actual: This page gives info about the actual charges incurred by Snowflake and gives the user the flexibility to compare it against their budgeted cost.
App Settings: This page has options to create views, trigger full load, set up incremental task schedules, and the option to suspend or resume the incremental task. The help section on this page describes each of these as these settings are necessary for the smooth running of the app.

App Installation Steps:

1. Go to snowflake marketplace and hit the get button
2. Once the app is installed and you open it a dialog box will pop up and will request EXECUTE TASK, EXECUTE MANAGED TASK and IMPORTED PRIVILEGES ON SNOWFLAKE DB.These permissions are required for the app to function smoothly.
3. Once the above permissions are granted navigate to the App Settings page. Please read the help text on this page before performing any action.
4. In the App Settings page set the "Trigger full load" to "yes" choose a date from which you want to load history data and hit submit.
5. Once the full load is finished the set "Set Incremental Task schedule" to "Yes" in "Enter Task Schedule", add a cron based schedule (refer example in help text). Set "Task action" to "Resume". Hit the Submit button.

On completion of above steps you are ready to use the app.
