Effects of the Gut Microbiome and Environmental Enteric Dysfunction on Immune Responses to the ETVAX Vaccine: An Exploratory Study in Zambian Children

The study was a PhD project aiming to understand the role of the gut microbiome and environmental enteric dysfunction on immune responses to the ETVAX vaccine. The study concurrently investigated the bacterial and viral component of the microbiome in association with immune responses elicited by ETVAX in 6 to 23 month old children who participated in a Phase Ib clinical trial in Zambia. The public health implications include improved understanding of the factors that influence the poor immune responses to oral vaccines in LMICs
