Associated publication title: Acute physiological and behavioural effects of one session of 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in post-stroke aphasiaAssociated publication description: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) shows promise as an aphasia treatment, however its physiological mechanisms in people with aphasia (PWA) remain largely unclear. Electroencephalography (EEG) could be used to explore rTMS mechanisms. The present study investigated the acute effects of rTMS in PWA on: 1) an EEG measure of language (N400 event-related potential; ERP); and 2) picture naming. Eleven people with chronic non-fluent or anomic aphasia (64 ± 10.13 years old; 8 males; 37.27 ± 20.64 months since stroke) received one session of 1-Hz rTMS and one session of sham to the right pars triangularis at 80% resting motor threshold (RMT). N400 mean amplitude and picture naming accuracy were compared before and after each session.Datasets are provided for the physiological measure (N400 ERP). Files are named: ERPData.xlsx (primary analysis; N400 mean amplitude in Pz electrode), ERPData_Cz.xslx (exploratory analysis; N400 mean amplitude in Cz electrode), ERPData_Lat.xslx (exploratory analysis; N400 peak latency in Pz electrode). Statistical script to analyse these datasets is named ERPStatistics.r.Datasets are also provided for the behavioural measure (picture naming). Files are named: PictureNamingAccuracy.xslx (primary analysis; picture naming accuracy) and PictureNamingLatency.xlsx (exploratory analysis; picture naming latency). Statistical script to analyse these datasets is named PictureNamingStatistics.r.Raw .poly5 EEG recordings, used to extract the N400 ERP, are provided for all 11 participants (numbered P001-P012; no P008) at pre- and post-rTMS timepoints in real and sham condition (4 EEG recordings per participant). These files are named accordingly (please note SJ stands for Semantic Judgment, which was the task used to elicit the N400). Preprocessing scripts for EEG data are provided as .m files (Step 1 to Step 6). The channel labels required in Preprocessing Step 1 are provided: chanlabels.xlsx. Script to extract ERP parameters from preprocessed EEG data is also provided (ExtractERPParameters.m), however the derived data for ERP parameters has already been provided as aforementioned (ERPData.xlsx etc.).All data and code required for cluster-based permutation analysis of the N400 ERP are provided. Refer to ClusterBasedPermutation_README file for instructions.
