We are interested in studying the evolutionary history of the D. takahashii species subgroup, which, before this genome, had only one long-read reference-quality genome (species: D. takahashii). In this project, we have provided another high-quality genome for the subgroup (species: D. lutescens). Drosophila lutescens is often studied alongside D. takahashii in temperature-related adaptation studies, where D. lutescens is more cold-tolerant than D. takahashii. This follows expectations, as D. lutescens is a temperate species, and D. takahashii is a subtropical species. Their ranges overlap on Honshu, Japan, and they are able to hybridise in laboratory settings, making them interesting candidates for future molecular studies to dissect temperature-related traits.
