For cohousing experiment, 3-5 weeks of age WT and MCJ-deficient female mice were mixed during 4 weeks prior to colitis induction. Colitis was induced administrating DSS in drinking water (2%) for 7 days followed by a recovery period of three days with autoclaved water. Feces were collected at the end of the experiment and stored at -80ºC. Microbial populations present in the colon of experimental mice were characterized by sequencing the V3-V4 region from the 16S rRNA gene on an Illumina miSeq.
