Mycobacterium haemophilum is a slowly-growing acid fast bacterium that belongs to the group of nontuberculous mycobacteria. It is distinguished from other mycobacteria by its preference for a lower growth temperature, and by its requirement for iron supplementation in the culture medium. This organism causes disease in humans, most often skin infections in immunocompromised patients, but can also cause disseminated and pulmonary infections in immunocompromised hosts, and cervical lymph node infections in immunocompetent children.
