Collection from ten seasons of University of Melbourne field work at Tell Ahmar, ancient Til Barsib, northern Syria. Salvage work was necessitated by the construction of the Tishreen (Tishrin) Dam and undertaken from 1988 to 1999, the date of completion of the dam and inundation of the surrounds. Tell Ahmar on the east bank of the Euphrates River, close to the confluence of the Sajur River, was ideally placed to function as a crossing point from upper Mesopotamia to northern Syria. To a large extent the prominent and strategic location of Tell Ahmar determined the Assyrian interest in the site and Tell Ahmar reached its maximum size under the Assyrians.
