Extreme environments such as caves are an excellent source of novel organisms from understudied branches of the tree of life. Such organisms often possess unique metabolic capabilities, such production of novel metabolites and biomaterials for drug discovery and biotechnology applications; and conversion of inexpensive or undesirable materials to value added products such as biofuels. Whole genome analysis of such organisms also sheds light on the molecular bases of biodiversity. Therefore, sequencing the genomes of novel organisms from extreme environments is important both for understanding and ultimately harnessing unique metabolic capabilities and for understanding molecular biodiversity in general.
