The Department of Railways was organised into various branches, each with its own separate registry and record-keeping systems dealing with its own activities and administration. The correspondence registered includes correspondence received from the public, other government departments, other railway branches including the Secretary's Branch. The Secretary's Branch correspondence referred to the Branch for action was registered in both systems and filed within the Secretary's correspondence series, ie VPRS 421. This series documented the activities of the Way and Works Branch of Victorian Railways and the Engineering and Development Group, Transport Operations Division, State Transport Authority. The Group was responsible for the provision of engineering, technical and scientific services, the design of rolling stock, civil engineering, signalling and communications installations and their construction, the setting and monitoring of standards for design, construction and maintenance of all rolling stock and the co-ordination of infrastructure maintenance programs. The series comprises general correspondence and works files containing correspondence, internal memos, plans of proposed works, tender and contract documents. Related Series The general files maintained by the Civil Engineering Department, Civil Construction Group are located in VPRS 12818 General Files, Civil Engineering Department, Civil Construction Group (Numeric System with C prefix). The capital works project files maintained by the Project Management Group are located in VPRS 12810 Capital Works Projects Files, Project Management Department, Alpha-Numeric System. The P7 to P 10 consignments of this series were previously processed as VPRS 12765.
