Phenotypic and Molecular Characterization of Carbapenem-Resistant Escherichia coli Isolated from Retail Meats in Hat Yai, Thailand

This study investigates the prevalence and molecular characteristics of carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CREC) in raw beef, pork, and chicken samples collected from an open market in Hat Yai, Thailand. Using selective culturing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, PCR-based gene detection, and phylogenetic analysis, we identified a dominant presence of CREC isolates, including strains harboring the blaNDM and blaVIM carbapenemase genes. Our findings underscore the public health implications of antimicrobial resistance in foodborne pathogens and highlight the need for enhanced surveillance and control strategies in food production environments.
